Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton) escape

On December 24, 1951, 16 political prisoners were able to escape from the Hoa Lo Prison and five of them succeeded in joining the resistance against French colonial rule in Indochina.

The Vietnam Military History Museum (Hanoi): 105mm artillery piece

The Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi has a 105mm artillery piece that was captured from French troops in the battle of Nghia Lo during the Northwest Campaign (October 1, 1952). The artillery piece was then used during the battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954).

The Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi contains a couple of aircraft used in the Vietnam War including this Mig-21 Fighter that downed 14 US aircraft from January 1967 to May 1969.

The Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi

The Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi was set up on July 17, 1956 inside the former French expeditionary barracks. It covers 10,000 m² and its one of seven national museums in Vietnam. Outside of the museum there are a number of military items on display, such as helicopters, tanks and MiG fighters. Inside of the museum there are a number of interesting exhibits such as a model that shows the final battle for Saigon in 1975 and a bicycle that was used to transport war supplies along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Hanoi’s Cot Co Flag Tower is approximately 33.4 meters tall and from the top, it offers a great view of Hanoi and what is left of the Hanoi Citadel.

Hanoi Citadel: The Cot Co (Flag Tower)

The Cot Co (Flag Tower) is part of the Hanoi Citadel (plus the Vietnam Military History Museum) and its one of the symbols of Hanoi. It was built in 1812 as a later addition to the Hanoi Citadel, which was built by Emperor Gia Long with help from French engineers in 1805. The Cot Co Flag Tower is approximately 33.4 meters tall and contains a 54 step spiral staircase.
