In this section of the Hanoi Hilton (Hoa Lo Prison), large numbers of prisoners were kept during the colonial French Indochina period.
During the colonial French Indochina period at the Hoa Lo Prison or Hanoi Hilton, there was a 270 square meter stockade area for up to 300 female political prisoners.
Only part of the original Hoa Lo prison or Hanoi Hilton still exists today as a museum. Most of it was demolished during the mid-1990s to construct the Hanoi Tower (which includes the Somerset Grand Hanoi serviced apartments) building which now occupies most of the site.
